Abe’s Trail is gem of a trail in Girdwood and a very fun mountain bike ride! The ride is an out-and-back in the forest and is about a 40 minute climb and quick descent, making it easily done in under an hour.
Abe’s Trail is advanced riding for sure. It starts out super steep with a few drops and banked corners. While the angle mellows after the initial drop, the roots and features stay challenging until the end!
Abe’s trail accessed from the Beaver Pond trail that begins where California Creek crosses Crow Creek Rd. You’ll see the California Creek trail to your right, then a slight climb and short descent and you’ll see Abe’s on your right – it’s well signed. The climb has pedal sections and a lot of pushing as well, especially near the top! The trail doesn’t ‘top out’ or really end formally . . . rather it becomes unimproved and clearly less travelled. It’s at this spot that it’s time to descend.
When you finish the descent, you can finish via the Beaver Pond to make it a longer ride. I’ve also ridden this Crow Pass – Iditarod – Abe’s which is super fun as well (3.5 solid hours of riding)! A car shuttle helps by delivering the Iditarod elevation for ‘free.’ Mountain biking Abe’s Trail and these others are just one more reason that Girdwood is a fabulous place to hang out with a mountain bike!
